Robotic Pool Cleaners Save Energy, Utility Reports

A major California electrical provider has concluded that robotic pool cleaners can contribute significantly to energy efficiency and cost savings.

Pacific Gas & Electric spent two years studying the efficiency of automatic pool cleaners. In 2009, it evaluated suction and pressure-side cleaners, which operate off of the pool pump or use a separate booster pump.

Last year, it tested robotic cleaners, which operate off of a separate, low-voltage power supply.

Its conclusion? Operating for three hours per day, 365 days per year, robitic cleaners can save consumers more than $500 per year in energy costs compared to cleaners that operate off the pool's filtration pump and more than $800 per year compared to cleaners that use a separate booster pump.

The average robotic cleaner, PG&E found, consumes 0.18 kilowatts of energy for each hour it operates. At three hours per day, 365 days per year, the annual power consumption for a robotic cleaner is 197.1 kilowatts. At an average cost of 30 cents per kilowatt, the annual energy cost for a robotic cleaner is about $59.

For cleaners powered by the pool filter pump, the utility calculated energy consumption of 1.526 kilowatts per hour, or about 1,671 kw per year, at an annual cost of $501.

Booster-pump-powered cleaners consumed 2.73 kilowatts per hour, PG&E found, for a total of 2.989.35 kw per year at an annual cost of $897.

PG&E's report concluded that for pools with two-speed filtration pumps, pool cleaner power demand and energy use can be reduced using a robotic cleaner while operating the pool pump at low flow and speed for optimum filtration efficiency.

"Given the complexity and cost of setting up hydraulic cleaners to operate at maximum efficiency," the report stated "and the relative simplicity of adding a robotic cleaner while operating the pool pump for maximum filtration efficiency, it is recommended that consideration be given to the class of robotic cleaners, with selection for maximum cleaning performance in individual pools left to pool professionals."
